Ahem …

Well yes, it’s been a little while between drinks.

It appears that, sometimes, it’s just not possible to travel, study, cook, learn foreign languages, explore a new city and maintain a blog.

That doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten it though.  I know that the Melbourne food bloggers scene is dynamic, curious and above all, dedicated to great food; I can only assume this is replicated around the country.  I’d like to capture all this energy in one place, to give the public a window into the fascinating world of us food-lovers and to give bloggers a space to meet, to read and perchance to eat.

This blog will stay in slow motion for the rest of this year, but with luck 2011 will see it burst into life.

Stay tuned…

Thanks bloggers!

Wow, thanks so much for all the feedback both here and at www.twitter.com/aussiefoodblogs!

I want this site to be collaborative, so please keep the comments rolling in.  If I have missed your blog it’s almost certainly because I haven’t seen it yet, so please leave a link to it in the comments.

I’m off for a few days in the internet-free wilds, but I will add blogs I’ve missed early next week.

  • The Hungarian
362 Bridge Road, Richmond Phone: 0421 993 132 Let me say first off that I’m glad I wasn’t wearing my red gingham shirt to this place. Because there’s so much of it in the window and on the tables as to almost give me a kitsch aneurysm. I like this place. It has a sense of humour. Take their menu, for instance. Everybody loves a good pun. Although, at what po […]
  • Thai Veggie Hutt
January 21, 2012 Our afternoon got off to a confusing start. We discovered that MONA was launching its own fancy food market, with more live music and cooking demos to boot, but the transporting ferry was booked out 20 minutes before its departure. As an alternative we looked up the Theatre Royal, where Icelandic band Amiina were providing their own instrume […]
  • Green Chilli Tandoori, Clifton Hill
Green Chilli is my favourite place to order from on a lazy hungover Sunday when there are no fresh veggies in the house and no motivation to get out and buy some. These guys are very friendly and super-helpful when it comes to identifying what on the menu can be made vegan. My favourite thing on the menu is the Mushroom Karahi - it is super-flavourful, nice […]
  • Snapshot of so much eating in Singapore
I will be kidding myself if I say that I will report and blog about every single place that I ate in the last trip to Singapore. Too much eating and in that sweltering heat, too much walking. Therefore, no weight was gained but a lot of pleasure was gained. For my benefit and benefit [...]
  • Tyre + Broken Glass = Puncture
I was out on a training ride with Ian yesterday - we are training to ride the 145km 2XU Great Ocean & Otway Classic Ride - the fella needs a fair bit of work to get back in shape for this ride. If we do the Classic Ride at yesterday's pace, I guarantee we will be told to get into the back seat of the neutral car service for going so slow... :P To be […]

  • FALAFEL
The first time I ate falafel I was in Paris… as it often happened with Middle Eastern food that was almost unknown in Italy.  I am talking about 20+ years ago!  I still remember the shop I bought them from.  It was near Place des Vosges, in my favourite area of town: the Marais, which is also the most famous Jewish quarter in Paris, thus abounding in Middle […]
  • Help make Ballarat better
The reviews from last week’s Ballarat Beer Festival have been pretty good. Still, the organisers want to make it better and have created a survey to get patron’s feedback on how they can make it even better next year. Are you one of the more than 6000 who went? Let them know what you thought by clicking the banner above. You could win a $100 Ticketek Voucher […]
  • Share The Spirit Festival – an indigenous celebration on Australia Day
It was Australia Day on 26th January 2012. It was also the 40th anniversary when the Aboriginal protestors first setup their “tent embassy” outside the Parliament House at Canberra to represent the political rights of Australian Aborigines. To the majority of Australians, it is a day of celebrating who we are as an “Australian”. A day of celebration across a […]

  • Easy Peasy Summer Series- meringue nests with fruit
This light and easy to assemble dessert comes from a close friend of mine proving that you don’t have to slave over a kitchen for hours to make something delicious.  Meringue nests with fruit (thanks Amy!) Ingredients: * in season fruit or berries * pre-made meringue nests * 1-2 tubs of fruche yoghurt * maple syrup for drizzling Method: Fill the nests with f […]
  • January Nibbles, Just [Not] Like a Koala
This post arises from the fact that I am both similar to and very different from a koala. What koalas and I have in common is that we both spend a large portion of our waking hours eating (or thinking about eating), but we diverge in the sense that koalas eat only eucalyptus leaves forever and ever, whereas I crave novelty on my plate. Luckily, I have friend […]
  • An Introduction to Nyonya cooking
The word Nyonya is used to describe a method of cooking which combines Chinese and Malay techniques and ingredients. Mixed marriages between the Straits Chinese and the Malays obviously resulted in a mix of the culinary styles as well as handicrafts and fashion. Interestingly the word actually means “females”, and the Nyonya recipes are often … Continue read […]
  • :: The Chicken Diaries :: 18 to 20 Weeks Old ::
I have not written about the chickens since the roosters went to live on the farm, before Christmas. Now the three girls are growing up, and we are hoping they'll start a-laying anytime soon. I noticed the wood shavings in one of the nesting boxes was hollowed out a bit, and I've seen Spotty checking that area out a few times... but who knows, mayb […]

  • Looking for Tips for Training for Skiing!
In a couple of months I will be lucky enough to go to Vail for the American Ski Cup Classic and I’ll also get a chance to ski. I do ski and I love it. Last year I totalled about 4 days in Perisher but picked up my short turns down Olympic run fairly quickly. So you see, that is my challenge – I need to train for the 6 hours min potential skiing in Vail. I ha […]

  • Lentil patties
  • Lentil patties
"Where do you get your protein from?", is one of the most common questions I get when I tell someone I've gone vegan. Beans, peas, greens, nuts, seeds, lentils - plants! There is certainly no lack of protein in a plant-based diet, yet the protein myth persists. The rise of the high-protein diets (paleo, being the latest), has probably contribu […]

My children love ice cream. In this hot weather, they’re having it at least once a day, usually twice, and sometimes even before breakfast. (Shhh! Don’t tell their grandma!) So I was thrilled to discover a great recipe for healthy ice cream by the lovely JJ from 84th & 3rd. JJ made a Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream for our recent Death by Chocolate bloghop, ma […]

5.22pm, Saturday 28th January, 51st & Broadway, Midtown, Manhattan, New York, NY, USA Here’s proof folks, I drove all the way into Manhattan, dropped the wine at the hotel on 39th – my home for the next 14 nights – and then navigated my way up to 55th and returned the rental car gratefully to Hertz. Thanks yet again for a magic vehicle – I felt like a ro […]

I realise I probably mention the weather on here far too much!  However, it’s unlikely to change in the immediate future. • NEWS: Beer Extra
There's no mistaking it: craft beer is booming in Brisbane right now. In the last six months, a multitude of new bars have opened, old ones have given their beer taps/list a crafty make-over, and there seems to be no sign of it slowing down any time soon. In addition, there's a whole swag of events coming up that promise to showcase the best in Aus […]

My kids love to have routine and order.  They seem to feel comfortable in knowing how our days, weeks and months are organised.  Friday nights are pizza night and have been for many years now.  The kids go through waves where some Friday nights they will demolish every slice in sight, and other times they just pick at one or two pieces.  But when I have brok […]
